GEMS is committed to fund all clinically appropriate care and related costs, including coronavirus related testing, in line with the prevailing NICD and NDoH guidelines or protocols. GEMS is also obliged to cover and will cover diagnosis, treatment costs of clinically appropriate COVID 19 related medical expenses as provided for in its Rules and Benefit entitlements and the Medical Schemes Act of 1998.

We encourage all GEMS members to recognise that the government has put measures in place to detect, manage and contain the spread of the virus. The Scheme urges members to continue with observing basic hygiene measures and maintaining social distancing to minimise the risk of infection and spreading the virus.

Follow the guidelines published by the NICD and the NDoH and consult immediately with your primary healthcare provider to report any suspected cases of exposure. Members can also contact the government 24hr Coronavirus Hotline at 0800 029 99 / Coronavirus WhatsApp line is 0600 123 456.

How to protect yourself and others against Corona Virus

  • Clean your hands often. Use soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand rub.
  • Maintain a safe distance from anyone who is coughing or sneezing.
  • Wear a mask when physical distancing is not possible.
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth.
  • Cover your nose and mouth with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Stay home if you feel unwell.
  • If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention.
