GEMS supports the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act

We are committed to protecting your personal data

Your right to privacy and security is very important to us. The Government Employees Medical Scheme and its contracted Service Provider Network (SPN) treat personal information as private and confidential.  We collect personal information for the purposes set out in the Scheme’s Registered Rules or otherwise communicated to you and we use your information for a number of different purposes, for example to provide our services to members and others and to meet our legal and regulatory obligations.

GEMS supports the Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act. Complying with this Act will allow us to continue to provide you with improved coordination of care in a secure environment thereby granting us the ability to enhance your current quality of care.

Being able to share your health information with your healthcare practitioner is essential to optimal health service delivery. In a medical emergency we want to provide fast, reliable care for you and your family. Your healthcare provider's access to your health information could be critical in your hour of need to prevent avoidable complications.

In less urgent medical scenarios where you are managing your chronic condition(s) or maintaining a healthy body, you and your doctor will be able to coordinate the care and treatment you receive from multiple professionals. Not only can this save you time and money, but help ensure that you receive all care you need.

The POPI Act requires us to meet certain criteria in order to continue to provide you with this world-class level of care. This Act serves to promote the protection of personal information as well as the ways in which it is processed. In compliance with this Act, we will notify you of your role in ensuring we continue to provide high quality healthcare.

For more information refer to the POPI terms and conditions.
